The SC state fair will offer new, unique foods next week. Do they sound tasty?

Some of the new foods coming to the South Carolina State Fair this month will be nothing if not unique.

The Palmetto State’s largest annual event, the state fair, returns Oct. 12 through Oct. 23 at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds — and this year the event will feature several specialty foods for visitors to enjoy.

New foods at the fair this year will include:

The ‘Steak Poutine Sundae’

This unique snack features fresh-cut fries, layered with cheese curds covered in hot gravy and topped with sirloin steak. Think cheese steak meal in a cup!

Cookies and cream-topped funnel cakes & elephant ears

Funnel cakes and elephant ears are a much-beloved staple of fair food across the country. However, this year at the state fair you can get them topped with Bavarian cream and sprinkled with crushed Oreo cookies and chocolate chips. Your sweet tooth will say “thank you.”

Fried Moon Pies

Moon Pies are a traditional southern treat. Another southern tradition is the practice of frying foods that are not normally fried. So naturally, these two traditions coming together was only a matter of time.

The fried, graham-cracker and marshmallow-filled treat will be available in chocolate and banana flavors.

What could be more refreshing than a fresh slice of watermelon? How about a freshly-made cup of watermelon iced tea?

State fair overview

Overall, the fair will feature more than 90 vendors that will serve up classic fair favorites, like corn dogs.

From sky-high thrillers to family-friendly fun rides, the fair will have more than 60 rides. Also, more than 70 bands, acts, exhibits, animal races and more will take place throughout the 12 days of the event.

The free daily circus at the fair is also back with a renowned lineup of acts. And more than 17,000 competitive exhibits will showcase some of South Carolina’s best in art, crafts and agriculture.

Museum of the Moon, an international traveling exhibition sponsored by South Carolina ETV, will be on display and free with fair admission.

And returning this year is the state fair’s special lunch brunch ticket. Pay your entry fee and receive a refundable $20 ticket. Return it to the ticket booth by 2 p.m. to get your money back. The lunch brunch tickets are available from noon to 2 p.m. each weekday (except Oct. 12).
