Lizzo says body positivity has been 'co-opted' from fat people: 'No one cares anymore'

Lizzo is speaking out about the body-positivity movement, which she says has been "co-opted" from the people who started it.

On Thursday, the pop star, who has been a vocal advocate for self-acceptance and body positivity, responded to a TikTok user who made a video reacting to a comment telling her to lose weight. In the video, the user asked why people on social media won't let her "just exist in my body."

According to Lizzo, it's because the body-positivity movement is no longer centered on the type of people who created it.

"Now that body positivity has been co-opted by all bodies, and people are finally celebrating medium and small girls and people who occasionally get rolls, fat people are still getting the short end of this movement," she said.

The singer added that "we're still getting talked about, memed, shamed," but "no one cares anymore" because body positivity is no longer focused on fat people.

"Yes, please be positive about your body," she said. "Please use our movement to empower yourselves. That's the point. But the people who created this movement — big women, big brown and Black women, queer women — are not benefiting from the mainstream success of it."

Lizzo capped off her TikTok asking viewers to support people with all body types — not just "these medium girls that you praise." In her caption, she asked fans to use the movement to empower themselves but also to "protect and uplift the bodies it was created for and by."

On Sunday, Lizzo responded to another TikTok user, who made a video asking if people would want to "trade places with someone who was on the heavier side."

Lizzo predicted how most would answer.

"You would not, because you know that there's a whole system that oppresses fat people that you do not experience and that you will never experience," she said. "So let's remember body positivity: Yes, we want to end harassment and shame but we also are working to dismantle a system that oppresses fat people."
