Road blockades set up by community members remained around Zijin Mining's Colombia concession on Thursday, after nearly a week of protests which have hit the Chinese company's production. The blockades were set up around the gold mine in Buritica municipality on Aug. 12 to demand a rescue mission to find informal miners allegedly trapped in a tunnel. Production was stopped because of the blockades, the company said earlier this week, though a Zijin spokesperson did not respond when asked on Thursday whether output remained halted.

A manufacturer of the drug used in medication abortions on Thursday dropped its bid to sell mifepristone in Mississippi despite the state's recently enacted abortion ban. The company had argued that federal regulators' approval of mifepristone to induce abortion at up to 10 weeks of pregnancy overrode the state's prohibition on nearly all abortions. "We are pleased to have again successfully defended Mississippi's abortion laws," Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said in a statement.

New Zealand police are investigating the suspected murder of two children whose remains were found in suitcases bought at an online auction for an unclaimed locker last week. Police launched a homicide inquiry in Auckland last week after the remains were found by a family going through the contents of a storage locker they had purchased unseen.
