Live blog: News from Miami Marlins news conference on eve of opening day against the Mets

The Marlins are holding several news conferences on Wednesday in advance of Thursday’s home opener against the Mets at loanDepot Park (4:10 p.m., Bally Sports Florida).

Please keep checking back for updates all afternoon.

2:45 p.m. update: Manager Skip Schumaker said the rotation order is Sandy Alcantara, Jesus Luzardo, Edward Cabrera and Trevor Rodgers and then Johnny Cueto, who threw 76 pitches in Jupiter on Wednesday.

The reason Cueto is No. 5 is a result partly of arm soreness following the WBC, which has abated.

“Cueto being a little bit behind because of the WBC; it made a lot of sense for Game 5,” Schumaker said.

Schumaker said A.J. Puk, Tanner Scott and Dylan Floro are all options to close....

Schumaker said Bryan De La Cruz will get the majority of playing time in the third outfield spot (primarily left) early on, but Jesus Sanchez will play some.

“I don’t see a straight platoon,” he said. “De La is in a really good spot. De La, with what happened second half last year, [we] feel good where he’s at. He will get the bulk [of playing time] early on, but we’ll rotate a lot of those positions. Sanchez had a real nice spring training.”...

Schumaker said catcher won’t be an even split between Jacob Stallings and Nick Fortes, but there won’t be an enormous gap, either. Stallings is the starter.

“You’ll see Nick get a lot of at-bats,” Schumaker said. “He can hit. There’s a comfort factor with Jake [among pitchers]. I have no problem starting Nick more games this year. He’s earned it and the relationships he has built with other players has grown. You’ll see both of them. I wouldn’t say 50 50, but they are both going to play a lot of games.”...

He said Yuli Gurriel will get some playing time at first base on days when Garrett Cooper is the designated hitter or off.

Schumaker said Garcia gives a “solid at-bat, has driven in a lot of runs. I don’t think he’s scared. Coming off the bench, I like a veteran bat, a guy who can put the ball in play. Against a back end reliever, that is very very valuable. It’s tough to come off the bench if you’re strikeout prone and Yuli is not that. He will give Cooper days off. He’s a Gold Glove caliber player. Can play second, first, no problem. In the clubhouse, you see guys gravitate toward him.”

2:12 update: Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner who on Thursday will make his fourth consecutive Opening Day start, said the rotation as a whole has the potential to be “super good.”

Beyond him, the Marlins have Jesus Luzardo, Edward Cabrera and Trevor Rogers — three young-yet-talented pitchers — and veteran Johnny Cueto rounding out the group.

“We just need to stay healthy, take the mound every fifth day, compete and give our 100 percent,” Alcantara said.

As for Alcantara’s personal confidence coming off a Cy Young-winning season?

“I’m always confident,” Alcantara said. “I think that’s why I have really good success. ... I believe in myself.”

1:45 p.m.: The Marlins will become one of only eight teams in baseball wearing a sponsorship patch. ADT, the security firm, purchased rights for an undisclosed sum.

The ADT logo also will be displayed on the outfield wall, according to the team.

The words “safe at home” are now written on the field, between third and home.

ADT is paying the Marlins about $5 million per year, a source confirmed.

1:20 p.m. update: Jazz Chisholm said he’s growing comfortable playing center field:

“At the start of spring, [it was] a little shaky with the wind,” he said. “I feel it will be easier to play center field in the dome. I’ll have a little advantage of 81 games.”

The Marlins keep the roof closed most games.

Asked why he agreed to play center field, Chisholm said: “We brought Luis [Arraez] to second base. So I’m going to work hard to play center field just as he’s working hard to play second base. We’re going to have fun.”

1:18 update: New second baseman Arraez said of the loaded National League East: “Everyone knows it’s a hard division but it’s not impossible.”

Arraez hit two homers at loanDepot park during the WBC. He feels comfortable in this stadium, even though it’s considered a pitcher-friendly park. In big league games, he’s 1 for 10 in his career at the Marlins’ stadium.

“I don’t want to try too much,” he said of navigating the ballpark. “I just want to put the ball in play. If I hit a couple homers, I’ll be happy. I just want to get on base and win a couple games.”
