Manchester City to face Chelsea in heavyweight FA Cup clash

Manchester City and Chelsea have been drawn to play each other in one of a number of all-Premier League ties in this season's FA Cup third round.

Pep Guardiola's team will host Graham Potter's Chelsea in the Cup competition just a few days after their top-flight meeting on January 5, as the domestic season grinds back into action after the hiatus for the Qatar World Cup. The matches will come thick and fast once the players return from the Middle East so it will be interesting to see how the Premier League clubs handle the FA Cup this campaign, especially when it comes to ties against fellow top-flight teams.

Other all Premier League ties include Liverpool entertaining Wolves, Brentford facing West Ham, Manchester United hosting Everton and Southampton traveling to Crystal Palace.

Current Premier League leaders Arsenal have been handed an away day against Oxford United, who currently sit 13th in League One. Meanwhile, high-flying Newcastle United have been handed a trip to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday who currently lie third in League One. Without a piece of domestic silverware since way back in 1955 the Saudi Arabia-owned club may well look for a good run in the oldest cup competition in the world.

Of the minnows – always looking for a big pay day against a top-flight club for financial reasons and the chance to create more FA Cup giant-killing magic – National League (fifth tier) Chesterfield were drawn at home to Championship side West Brom, while counterparts Boreham Wood will face League One Accrington Stanley. Wrexham, the current leaders of the National League, head for second-tier Coventry, currently 11th in the Championship.

Leicester City, winners in 2021, will travel to either National League Dagenham & Redbridge or League Two Gillingham.

The matches will be played across January 6-9.

Boreham Wood fans are taking the positive out of the negative of not getting a possible giant-killing tie against a Big Club.

The lowest ranked side in the competition are to face Accrington Stanley (who are they? Exactly...) but rather than bemoan their luck, the fans are remarking that it's a good chance to get to the fourth round where, perhaps, they could face one of the likes of Liverpool and Man City.

Premier League leaders Arsenal

Travel to the city of dreaming spires - yes, Oxford. They'll face an Oxford United side currently sitting 13th in League One.

The pair last faced each other back in 2003, also in the Third Round, the north Londoners winning 2-0. You suspect Mikel Arteta will rest several of his first-choice players (they'll need a rest after the World Cup) so chances of an upset shouldn't be immediately kicked into Row Z.

...When Everton were drawn away to Manchester United. The draw was taking place at Anfield and the room was packed full of Reds. John Aldridge saw the funny side and added: "It means that one of [Liverpool's] rivals won't make the next round."

And the one that stands out from a Premier League perspective is the Manchester City vs Chelsea one...they meet in the top flight just days before.

Manchester United hosting Everton is another all-Premier League affair, as is Crystal Palace facing Southampton.

As for the minnows Boreham Wood they didn't get the marquee tie they wanted - they will face Accrington Stanley.

And their coach Luke Garrard, who's one of England's youngest and brightest managers, is waxing lyrical about what it means to the National League side describing it as 'brilliant'. Listening to managers like him reminds us that this is still an important competition for clubs like his. He wants 'one of the big boys' and a tie like that is brilliant financially for the Boreham Woods as well as the chance to create some headlines.

Yep, you've guessed it, it's Ronnie Radford's piledriver on an hideous cow-field of a pitch for Hereford vs Newcastle United in the 1972 FA Cup.

Radford died earlier this month bringing to attention once again the moment he'll forever be remembered by.

The round of giant killings

The eyes of the footballing world may well be focused on Qatar at the moment (if you want to follow the last match - Portugal vs Uruguay - of what's been an entertaining day's action you can do so here...) but for a bit of this evening the focus of fans may well turn back to their clubs as the draw for the third round of the FA Cup takes place.

In addition to the 20 winners of the second round there will be 44 other balls in the hat (or Perspex container as is now used) with all Premier League and Championship clubs joining the fray.

Last season's winners Liverpool may well still view this competition as not a huge priority (until the later stages) but such has been their poor form in the Premier League that a good run in the oldest cup competition in the world may well do Jurgen Klopp's side some good.

Tonight's draw takes place at Anfield, the famous home of the holders, with all the 'minnows' (think Boreham Wood and Chesterfield) hoping for a big tie against one of the giants (think Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal  etc etc).

Coming on the back of the World Cup, in an already-packed schedule, the attraction of the FA Cup for the big clubs may well be even less than usual - with players likely to be rested for the early rounds. But it's still a battle for the famous trophy, and come the third round - the round of giant killings - passion for the cup will doubtless return for many.

The FA Cup third round will not take place until the weekend of Saturday, January 7, 2023. Ties will be expected to be played across the dates of January 6/7/8/9, 2023.
