Little Caesars employee fired after writing 'Gay' on customer's receipt
A Little Caesars employee was fired after allegedly labeling a customer’s receipt with "Gay" instead of writing in the customer’s name.
Marcus Robertson and his cousin Rosman Harris placed an order at the Brook Road location of Little Caesars in Henrico, Virginia last Friday.
Upon receiving their order and corresponding receipt, Harris saw that the word "Gay" was printed on the top of the receipt, as shown here in Robertson’s post on Facebook:
Both men, who are gay, did not speak about their sexuality or anything related during the short time that they were inside the restaurant.
Harris explained:
"I was baffled, and it made me semi-angry because I feel like it's 2019 and we're still having to deal with this.”
The two men were never asked to give their names to print on the receipt, per Robertson’s Facebook post:
“How can you be so rude and disrespectful to a paying customer to label my name as gay when you didn’t even ask my name."
One of Robertson’s cousins went back to the restaurant to find that the same cashier was working when she confronted her about the incident:
“[The cashier] said, 'Well, oh, he was being loud, he was being rude.' So, my cousin was, like, 'No, he wasn't being loud or rude. He's hearing impaired, so when he talked loud that's for him to hear himself speak.”
“Like how are we in 2019 and I’m being discriminated against," added Robertson, who is hearing-impaired, on Facebook.
Though Harris claims the manager of the restaurant originally told his cousin that the employee would not be fired because the restaurant was “short-staffed”, both Harris and Robertson were informed that the cashier had in fact been let go by Monday, according to WTVR.
Tina Orozco, director of communications for Little Caesar's corporate offices, Detroit, said in a statement:
"Little Caesars maintains a zero-tolerance policy against any violations of professional conduct. This is a highly unusual, isolated situation at a store locally owned and operated by a franchisee. The franchise owner took immediate action to investigate this matter and has terminated the employment of the individual involved in the incident."
