The Saint Louis brie cheese joins 24 previously recalled cheeses that Old Europe Cheese made for various brands, including the store brands of Safeway, Meijer, Target, Fresh Thyme, Heinen’s, Market 32, Lidl, Trader Joe’s and Southeastern Grocers chains (Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Mas, Harveys Supermarkets). Over 20 varieties of Reny Picot cheeses, sold in various stores, and La Bonne Vie, sold in Publix and Kroger stores, also were involved in this recall.

Of the six people in six states infected, five were interviewed by state or federal health officials and four recalled eating brie and camembert cheese before being ill. One recalled eating the Lidl’s store brand, which is made by Old Europe. That ignited the recall.

Listeria kills about 260 of the 1,600 Americans infected each year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Senior citizens, pregnant women and children under 5 are the most vulnerable to listeria’s worse effects. Listeria can cause stillbirths and miscarriage. Listeria symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, high fever, severe headaches, stomachaches, stiffness, confusion and poor balance.

If you have any of the recalled cheeses, throw them out or return them to the store for a full refund. Then, clean and sanitize any surface or utensil that the cheese touched.
