Here’s a list of Kansas City area hospitals, clinics and pharmacies that still provide Plan B

Missouri doctors can still prescribe birth control to patients.

On Tuesday, one local system—Saint Luke’s—briefly stopped providing emergency contraceptives due to potential legal risk, but reversed its decision and continued providing Plan B again on Wednesday afternoon.

There are a host of hospitals and clinics that are still providing contraception to patients, including emergency contraceptives like the morning after pill.

“Birth control and emergency contraception remain legal and accessible in MO,” said Bonyen Lee-Gilmore, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri, in an email to The Star.

On Wednesday, state Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s office confirmed that Missouri law does not ban birth control.

“Missouri law does not prohibit the use or provision of Plan B, or contraception,” said Chris Nuelle, spokesperson for Schmitt.

Where can you still get birth control and Plan B around KC?

The Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) created a list of hospitals throughout the Kansas City region that are still providing emergency contraceptives.

These hospitals also provide sexual assualt nurse examinations for folks in need, according to MOCSA.

Official statements from KC hospitals

The Star has not independently verified the entire above list provided by MOCSA, but as of Wednesday evening, we have directly confirmed that the following hospitals and clinics are continuing to provide contraception. These are their direct statements.

Planned Parenthood clinics around Kansas City: “Nothing has changed with our family planning services—we are still prescribing birth control. Patients seeking birth control can contact us by phone or make an appointment online.”

University Health (formerly Truman Medical Centers): “University Health will continue to provide emergency contraception since it is not in conflict with Missouri state law. Our priority continues to be providing safe, high-quality healthcare to our patients.”

The University of Kansas Health System’s Missouri clinics: “We are prescribing birth control currently pending legal reviews of the legislation that went into effect in Missouri.”

Olathe Health: “We are not currently aware of the below services being under review, but like other healthcare systems, we are working to understand the impact the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision will have on our patients and providers.”

Swope Health: “Swope Health has no plans to reduce or restrict our women’s health or comprehensive family planning services that continue to be in keeping with federal and state law. Our providers will continue to put our patients needs first, with full support from Swope Health. As health systems, we are judged on how we demonstrate our mission—this includes not only providing quality care but ensuring the most vulnerable have access to it.”

Clinics and hospitals in Kansas, which are not affected by Missouri’s trigger ban law, are continuing to provide birth control.

Plan B at Kansas City pharmacies

On Wednesday, The Star verified that the following local pharmacies are selling Plan B without restrictions:

  • Walgreens

  • CVS

  • Walmart

  • Target

  • Hyvee

  • Price Chopper

Reporters called several locations of each store. Most had Plan B in stock. A few locations were out of stock or only had off brand emergency contraceptives because of a spike in demand, but the stores were planning to re-stock.
