Inside the Ukrainian drone unit conducting deep strikes on Russia
As snow fell in a wooded area of Ukraine, the long-range attack drones accelerated one by one down an unlit, abandoned road and their whirring engines propelled them into the night sky. The unmanned aircraft carrying explosive warheads are part of a Ukrainian campaign of long-range drone attacks that aim to inflict blows on Russia far behind the front line as Moscow's troops advance in the east. "Our main goal is to conduct strikes to hit logistics hubs in the rear, ammunition warehouses and decrease our enemy's pressure on the front," said the battalion commander of the Ukrainian drone unit, who gave only the call sign Casper.

S&P 500, Nasdaq flat as investors assess economic data; Boeing slips
(Reuters) -The benchmark S&P 500 and the Nasdaq struggled for direction on Friday, as investors avoided big bets and assessed fresh data to gauge the health of the economy, while Boeing dipped after issuing a quarterly profit warning. A S&P Global survey showed that business activity slowed to a ninth-month low in January amid rising price pressures, but firms reported higher hiring, supporting the Federal Reserve's cautious approach to monetary policy this year. At 10:16 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 101.48 points, or 0.24%, to 44,459.53, the S&P 500 lost 3.62 points, or 0.06%, to 6,115.09 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 17.56 points, or 0.09%, to 20,034.29.

Target ending DEI initiatives amid Trump's order on diversity programs
Earlier this week, President Trump issued a sweeping executive order directing federal agencies to terminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs, encouraging private companies to do the same. Many companies adopted policies designed to boost the recruitment, hiring and promotion of minority workers following the police killings of George Floyd and other Black Americans in 2020. Over the last year, however, several major companies, including Walmart, Amazon, and Meta, walked back their DEI policies in the face of public pressure and after the November election victory by Trump, who has long criticized DEI initiatives.

Slow UK growth ticks up in January but price pressures climb, PMI shows
(Reuters) -Tepid growth across British businesses edged up at the start of 2025 but employment and optimism contracted again and price pressures rose, according to a survey that underscored the challenge facing the Bank of England. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a further decline in January to 50.0, the PMI's dividing line between growth and contraction. The survey chimed with other signs of lacklustre growth and a weakening jobs market since finance minister Rachel Reeves raised payroll tax rises for businesses in her first budget on Oct. 30.

US court upholds block on Iowa immigrant arrest law
A U.S. appeals court refused on Friday to allow Iowa to implement a law allowing for the arrest and prosecution of people who are in the United States illegally. The St. Louis-based 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the Republican-led state's law, which had been set to take effect in July before it was blocked by a judge, would interfere with the federal government's ability to enforce U.S. immigration laws. "Decisions about the removal of illegal aliens touch on foreign relations and must be made with one voice," Circuit Judge Duane Benton wrote for the court.
