Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor Has Been Added to the Line of Succession on the Royal Family Website

When Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal life, it was made clear that Harry and Archie would continue to keep their places in the line of succession — at sixth and seventh respectively. When Lilibet was born on June 4 she became eighth in line to the throne, and now the royal family’s official website has been updated to reflect this change.

Lilibet was added to the royal family’s website in the section that explains the rules of the line of succession and details the first 23 in-line. The seven week old daughter of Harry and Meghan took her place after big brother Archie which saw her great uncle Prince Andrew moved down to ninth. However, despite the fact that they seem fairly high up the order right now, Harry, Archie and Lilibet’s positions are expected to fall substantially with the passing of time as George, Charlotte and Louis have their own children and grandchildren.

The basis for the line of succession was determined hundreds of years ago, but a significant change was made in 2013 which gave females equal rights to males to the throne. This meant that when Prince Louis was born in 2018 he did not overtake his big sister Princess Charlotte in the line of succession. The change did not alter the order retrospectively, however, which means that Princess Anne and her children remain below her younger brothers Prince Andrew and Prince Edward and their children. Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise, also remains below her brother James, Viscount Severn despite the fact that she is older.

Lilibet is the first royal so high up in the line of succession to be born in the US. She was christened Lilibet Diana in honor of her great grandmother and her grandmother.
