Leonardo DiCaprio has slated the Republican presidential candidates over their refusal to accept the facts of climate change.

The star was in Tokyo promoting his Oscar-winning turn in ‘The Revenant’ when he made the remarks.

“We should not have a candidate who doesn’t believe in modern science to be leading our country,” he said.

“Climate change is one of the most concerning issues facing all humanity and the United States needs to do its part.”

Donald Trump said as recently as this week that he is 'not a big believer in man-made climate change’.

He told Fox News earlier this year that it ;is just a very, very expensive form of tax. A lot of people are making a lot of money’.

He’s previously called global warming 'a hoax’, adding: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”

Ted Cruz, meanwhile, has said that climate change is a 'pseudo-scientific theory’.

DiCaprio signed a deal with Netflix last March to make a series of films made around environmental issues, including a documentary about climate change due for release later this year, in which filmmakers visited the North and South Poles, China and India.

He also used a large chunk of his Oscars acceptance speech to draw attention to climate change.

“Climate change is real,” he said. “It is happening right now, it is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world… who speak for all of humanity.”
