Leonardo DiCaprio has come under fire after it emerged that he undertook an 8000-mile day trip on a private jet in order to pick up an award for his environmental efforts.

DiCaprio is said to have taken the jet back to New York from the Cannes Film Festival this week, where he was honoured at the Riverkeeper Fishermen’s Ball, a campaign group for clean water, alongside the fashion designer Ralph Lauren.

Both received the ‘Big Fish’ award for their efforts on Wednesday night.

“My Foundation partners with many effective organizations that fight to protect our world’s lands and waterways, and I am proud to count the Hudson Riverkeeper among them,” he said, on accepting the award.

“We know that ignorance, greed and political malfeasance stand in the way of our simple vision of achieving the basic right of access to clean water for every living being on our shared planet. The work of the Riverkeeper is critical to creating and protecting a healthier future for millions of people.”

However, he then took a jet back to Cannes, where he gave a speech at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala the following evening.

It’s also said that he later hired a helicopter to fly him from his villa to another party at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.

Andrew Pendleton from Friends of the Earth told the Daily Mail: “It never looks good when a high-profile advocate for action on climate change like DiCaprio hops on a private jet.

“It’s why we get disillusioned about people in the public eye.”

DiCaprio’s reps have not commented on the matter, but a source 'close to the star’ said: “He did not book any flights. They were flights already planned – he hitched a ride. It was the only way for him to attend both events.”

At last year’s festival, he was also accused of hypocrisy for holidaying on a huge, gas-guzzling super-yacht, while the Sony hack in 2014 uncovered that he’d taken six private jet flights in just six weeks.
