Lava Flow Reaches the Sea in La Palma

Lava flows from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island La Palma, Spain, spilled into the sea late on September 28, according to the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute.

The Guardia Civil warned people within 3.5 km of the site to stay in their homes, “given the possibility of harmful gas” as the molten lava hit the water.

The Canary Islands Volcanological Institute said on September 27 that the lava and sea water would combine to create “water vapor loaded with hydrochloric acid”. The dangers presented by such gas, including skin irritation and breathing difficulties, would be “very local” it added. Credit: Guardia Civil via Storyful
