Furla's Re-Candy Bag Goes Green
So long, summer. We’re heading into September and fashion month with a fresh batch of the latest and greatest fashion news and launches. From Max Mara naming Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz its Face of the Future to Michael Kors’s new James Bond-inspired collection, stay tuned as we get ready for fall fashion.

1) Furla Launches Sustainable Re-Candy Bag

Why: Furla is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its iconic Candy bag with an updated and eco-conscious touch. The new release marks the Italian label’s first-ever sustainable bag offering, and features a sweet portable silhouette. From start to finish, Furla considers how the bag is made and how it is packaged, and—bonus!—it’s fully recyclable too. To ensure the production process was environmentally sound, Furla worked closely with Nativa, a regenerative design company. In conjunction with the green release, Furla also debuted a public space in Milan to display the delectable handbags in an outdoor setting rife with inflatable flowers, featuring videos explaining the sustainable process of creating the Re-Candy. Additionally, Furla is launching a Clubhouse account to host conversations about its future sustainability endeavors, hosted by none other than Italian fashion legend Anna Dello Russo. So have your cake—er, candy—and know the planet is rejoicing with your style choice, too.

2) Zazie Beetz Receives Max Mara’s Women in Film Face of the Future Award

Why: Congrats are in order for Zazie Beetz! The New York-based actress and ELLE cover girl is the recipient of the 2021 WIF Max Mara Face of the Future Award®. To properly celebrate, she was invited by the Maramotti family to Max Mara’s spring/summer 2022 show in Milan. The award is given out annually to an actress who “is experiencing a turning point in her career,” whether it be through acting, community-based initiatives, overall personification of star quality, grace, and style, or all of the above. Past recipients of the award include Katie Holmes, Kate Mara, and Emily Blunt. Beetz has been on the rise for the last couple of years, starring in the critically acclaimed TV show Atlanta, and will next appear in Netflix’s all-Black western The Harder They Fall alongside Regina King and Idris Elba.

3) Matchesfashion Presents Rodarte x Tom Petty

Why: Matchesfashion has partnered with Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy and Tom Petty’s daughters, Adria Petty and Annakim Violette, to create a nostalgic collection honoring the rocker’s triumphant record Wildflowers. The bright colors of the ’60s pair perfectly with the relaxed feeling of Rodarte’s ‘Radarte’ line of easy sweatsuits. To honor Petty and his legendary album, the team tapped several contemporary artists who channel his sense of cool to star in the campaign, including Japanese Breakfast (pictured here), King Princess, Kilo Kish, and Weyes Blood.

4) Michael Kors Announces MKC x 007 Partnership and Capsule

Why: To celebrate the long-awaited release of the 25th Bond film, No Time To Die, Michael Kors is teaming up with the 007 film franchise to debut three limited-edition bags that embody the sleek and travel-ready sensibility of the Bond universe. The MKC Bond Bancroft satchel, Bond Carryall, and Bond Duffel are all made in Italy and take on the luxurious and discreet nature of the British secret agent. In honor of the capsule, Michael Kors created a campaign film starring No Time To Die star Naomie Harris, seen here carrying the Bond Bancroft—the same handbag she wears in the film.

5) Sotheby’s Opens ‘Brilliant & Black: A Jewelry Renaissance’

Why: Sotheby’s, in partnership with author and jewelry authority Melanie Grant, has created a one-of-a-kind exhibition called Brilliant & Black: A Jewelry Renaissance. Grant worked closely with Sotheby’s to curate the list of over 20 Black jewelry designers from around the world, from global icons like Art Smith to emerging designers like Johnny Nelson and Marei New York (earrings pictured here). As Grant explains, this moment for Black jewelers is long overdue: “Jewelry artists of African descent have been largely ignored in favor of ‘African-inspired’ design over the last century, despite the fact that so many of the resources to make jewelry come from the continent. The events of 2020 have resulted in a cultural shift where Black talent is being acknowledged for its brilliance and jewelry designers for their contribution. They have compelling stories to tell.” Almost all of the designers are new to Sotheby’s and most have created new pieces exclusively for the occasion, taking this watershed opportunity to share their skill and creativity with a large audience. The exhibit is fully shoppable—a first for the auction house—online through October 10, and in person at Sotheby’s New York galleries from September 17 through September 26.

6) Áwet New York Unveils First Collection

Why: Áwet New York was founded by Eritrean refugee Áwet Woldegebriel in 2020. (The name “Áwet” translates to “victory” in his native Tigrinya language.) Woldegebriel, who gained asylum to America in 2000, created a clothing line that is a two-part love letter to New York. His first goal is to support garment workers during the pandemic by giving them work, and the second is to create a “livewear” collection that is directly inspired by the casual and modern classics New Yorkers find themselves wearing day in and day out. Through these efforts, the designer hopes to inspire other communities to find “victory” amid the chaos of the world.

Why: Luxury Italian label Brunello Cucinelli has carved out a devoted fanbase over the years for its commitment to top-tier luxury in its materials and production, as well as a devotion to sustainability. Its first collaboration is with eyewear heavyweight Oliver Peoples, a California-based brand that also exceeds expectations in luxury. The Italian craftmanship and Californian ease meld together beautifully to create something simple, timeless, and intricately crafted to ensure its longevity in your wardrobe.

8) Wandler Debuts Denim and Leather Trousers

Why: Dutch designer Elza Wandler is expanding her brand's offering from just accessories to leather and denim trousers. Wandlers combines her love for leather goods and her early days cutting her teeth at Levi's for a minimalist offering of trousers in various colorways. The wide leg cuts and high waists harmonize perfectly with Wandler's minimal chic aesthetic that she's honed through her bags, shoes, and accessories.

9) ADEAM Releases ICHI Gender Neutral Collection

Why: ADEAM was launched in 2012 with a focus on “East Meets West” style that creative director Hanako Maeda cultivated by splitting her time between Tokyo and New York. That sense of international cool is still with the brand almost 10 years later, as it releases “ICHI”, a gender neutral collection of no-nonsense wardrobe staples that all have a slight twist in proportion or finish. The individuality of Shibuya and Harajuku kids from Tokyo gave Maeda the creative inspiration for this endlessly versatile collection.

10) Loewe Reintroduces Amazona Bag

Why: Loewe is celebrating its 175th anniversary, and in honor of the occasion, the Spanish leather goods house is relaunching the iconic Amazona bag. First introduced in the ’70s, the Amazona takes its name from female characters in Greek mythology and was inspired by women joining the workforce and fighting for gender equality during that decade. The handbag comes in two sizes and two different textiles: Loewe’s signature nappa leather and a new blended cotton emblazoned with Loewe’s pattern logo. The leather comes in a variety of hues taken straight from the fall/winter 2021 runway, and deliver on the promise of easy, durable handbags that will fit enough to get you through the day and into the night.

11) Celine Debuts Tabou Bag

Why: Inspired by its leather goods archive, Celine’s fall bag offering features the French brand’s signature decorative lock. Creative director Hedi Slimane continues to reinvigorate the classics with contemporary touches and this bag is certainly no different. First seen in Celine’s winter 2021 runway show, the Tabou, made from smooth calfskin leather, is the perfect crossbody size and comes in white, anthracite, and tan.

Why: For its latest collab, Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière turned to Italian design legend Piero Fornasetti and the brand’s archive of over 13,000 pieces. Fornasetti’s surrealism and now-iconic ancient statue prints take on a new life with Ghesquière's contemporary eye for design and silhouette. 14) Dundas x Revolve Lands at NYFW

Why: Revolve, the online retailer, teamed up with acclaimed fashion designer Peter Dundas to present an exclusive capsule collection of ready-to-wear on the rooftop of Casa Cipriani during New York Fashion Week. The show featured supermodels Stella Maxwell and Imaan Hammam stomping down the metallic runway in looks that put Dundas’s signature flair for ’70s-tinged glamour on full display. The Revolve girl will find leopard-print micro-minis, lace slip dresses, and show-stopping evening gowns in gold lamé. Why: Icon of American style Ralph Lauren pulls inspiration from the timelessness of equestrian saddlery to create the Welington collection: a series of handbags, shoes, belts, small leather goods, watches, and jewelry that feature an instantly recognizable stirrup motif. Lauren gave the classic riding boot a contemporary edge, shortening its shaft height to make it a more wearable bootie.
