Here’s the latest on Sacramento triple-digit heat wave — expected as longest of 2022 so far
Sacramento is no stranger to hot weather, but this week temperatures are expected to heat up to triple digits and last longer than usual.
Sacramento is forecast to endure its longest 100-degree stretch of the year so far, which began Sunday and will continue until at least Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
If the forecast holds, Sacramento will see a seven-day streak of temperatures at 100 or above for the first time since 2020.
“Overall it’s not especially rare to get these long stretches here in Sacramento above 100 degrees,” said meteorologist Anna Wanless with the weather service. “We’ll see these stretches as late as mid-September.”
Sacramento was hit with a heat advisory Tuesday morning, which stretched through the Sacramento Valley, Northern San Joaquin, neighboring foothills and cities including Redding, Chico, Stockton, San Andreas and parts of the Delta and Nevada. The advisory ends Friday night.
“We’re just under a ridge of high pressures that are kind of just hitting over us that will continue to do so for the rest of this week,” Wanless said.
The hottest days are forecast on Tuesday and Wednesday. Residents are at risk for heat-related illness, particularly those working outdoors and should “reschedule strenuous activities for the early mornings or evenings,” the weather service wrote.
The weather service has recorded several 100-degree or greater stretches in Sacramento this year, the most recent being a two-day stretch on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3. Before that, there were several stretches throughout May, June and July.
The longest 100-degree stretch on record lasted 10 days in July 1960. The most recent longer stretch lasted a week in 2020.
As of Tuesday morning, the weather service has posted several heat warnings to its Twitter page, urging residents to stay cool, drink plenty of water and avoid the outdoors during the hottest hours of the day.
