After winning its sixth consecutive Emmy in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series this year, and getting back to his studio instead of his void, John Oliver has reached the end of another season with “Last Week Tonight.”
Don’t worry, this season isn’t anywhere close to his actual last one. Back in September of last year, “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” scored a 3-season renewal, taking the late night show through to 2023.
“For the past seven years, John and his incredibly talented team have taken on topics that are both in the public mind and off the beaten path, always managing to shed new light on these subjects with intelligence and searing humor,” Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max said at the time. “We are beyond thrilled to continue this relationship for three more years.”
So, as you’re here wondering if John Oliver have a new episode this week, the answer is no, there is a not new episode of “Last Week Tonight“ on Sunday, Nov. 21. Oliver will return with new episodes in 2022.
The late night host made sure to make his season finale extra exciting to tide fans over though, bringing in a whole slew of his famous friends.
In the show’s final segment, Oliver once again used his magical ability to snap his fingers and summon George Clooney (still via virtual split screen, of course). “I was hoping you might be able to cheer me up a bit,” Oliver said.
And cheer him up, Clooney did. For two minutes, Oliver was able to snap his fingers and summon any celebrity, not just Clooney. Naturally, when you’re given that ability, you need to make the most of it. The catch was, Oliver didn’t know who would pop up with each snap.
A string of celebrity cameos followed, including Jennifer Coolidge, Will Ferrell, RuPaul, Cardi B and Brian Baumgartner, best known for playing Kevin on “The Office.” Finally, “SNL” alum Leslie Jones popped in only to crankily inform Oliver “I don’t wanna be part of this…alakazam!”
