We can’t all be Tracy McGrady. Los Angeles Lakers forward Kentavious Caldwell-Pope learned that the hard way Friday night.
With 6:20 left in the third quarter, Caldwell-Pope found himself sandwiched between two defenders near the free-throw line. Desperate to make something out of nothing after he picked up his dribble, Caldwell-Pope attempted a desperation pass … off the backboard … to himself.
It did not go well.

That’s a pass Caldwell-Pope would probably like to have back. It missed the backboard completely, hitting either the shot clock or a bar near it. The whistle was blown immediately, the ball landed out of bounds and the Los Angeles Clippers prepared to take possession.
Caldwell-Pope, meanwhile, wiped his hands on his shorts to play the whole thing off as if the ball slipped. It’s a bold move, but we’re not sure we buy it.
We do get what he was going for, though. Tracy McGrady pulled off similar plays a few times in his career.
Caldwell-Pope’s pass was so bad that we can’t be 100 percent sure he was trying for T-Mac’s move, but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
In summary, at least he tried. Now, let’s hope Caldwell-Pope never does that again.
