Lady Gaga impressed the inauguration crowds not only with her powerful performance, but also through her dramatic ensemble. The musician sang the national anthem at the swearing-in of Joe Biden in Washington DC while wearing a custom-made Schiaparelli look.

Brand creative director Daniel Roseberry, a US native who is based in Paris, described the outfit as "a love letter to the country I miss so dearly". The pop star wore a fitted jacket in navy cashmere and skirt in washed red silk faille with a gilded dove of peace brooch.

“As an American living in Paris, this ensemble is a love letter to the country I miss so dearly and to a performer whose artistry I have so long admired," he said today. "Maison Schiaparelli is honoured to have this chance to dress the iconic Lady Gaga on this historic Inauguration Day. God Bless Lady Gaga and God Bless America.”

Although there is no questioning that Gaga's outfit is theatrical (voluminous, floor-length silk skirts are not everyday looks for most of us), it is perhaps more subdued than some of her previous wardrobe choices. Unlike meat dresses and the singer's most recent Met Gala ensemble which involved a 16-minute red-carpet transformation, her Schiaparelli creation imbued a mix of grandeur and respectability fitting of the occasion.

Gaga has long been a Biden fan. She became an enthusiastic supporter in the run-up to the 2020 election and even joined him on the campaign trail. During a tweet shared on 20 January, she described performing at the inauguration as an "honour" that has "great meaning".

"My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly," she said. "I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land. Respectfully and kindly, Lady Gaga."
