France’s minority government set to present make-or-break austerity budget
The French government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Thursday is set to deliver its 2025 budget, which is viewed as key to the new government's survival. A spiralling fiscal deficit requires spending cuts and tax hikes, measures that are unpopular with parties on the left and right, increasing the pressure on France's weak centrist coalition. Argentinian congress fails to overturn Milei university veto
STORY: Tense scenes unfolded in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (October 10) after the latest setback for student protesters against Argentina's libertarian leader Javier Milei. The lower house of Congress failed to gather enough votes to overturn President Milei's veto of a law that would have increased university funding. For Milei, it is a victory amid mass protests against his cuts to education and healthcare.Demonstrators clashed with police, shouting slogans and pushing against barricades as riot officers attempted to disperse the crowd."They are going after everything, and the worst thing is that we knew they would go after everything. They are attacking education, they are attacking culture and public health. They hate the people, they hate the working class, and they hate the poor. There is a lot of anguish."Milei vetoed the bill last month, which had aimed to adjust public university funding to match Argentina’s high inflation. Despite 160 lawmakers voting in favor of a veto override – it fell six votes short of the required two-thirds majority.Although Milei's far-right party is a minority in Congress, it has allied with conservative lawmakers to block the opposition. The president argues that the law would threaten fiscal stability during a severe economic crisis, with health, pension, and education spending facing the most significant cuts. Under his austerity drive, high inflation has started to slow but Argentina is deep in recession and poverty rates have surged over 50%.But opposition to the president's spending cuts, especially to education funding, still retains impassioned supporters.

FTSE 100 Live 10 October: Index seen higher, GSK in $2.2bn Zantac settlement
US economic optimism last night helped the S&P 500 index to set its 44th record high this year, having improved by another 0.7%. Deutsche Bank said the benchmark’s 21.4% year-to-date advance means that this is its strongest performance at this point of the year since 1997. The resilience of the US economy has reduced the chances of rapid interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, particularly after last night’s September meeting minutes showed policymakers in favour of a gradual pace.

Analysis-BOJ may not be as dovish as Ueda's cautious rhetoric suggests
Japan's improving economic conditions and receding U.S. recession worries are likely to bring prospects of a December or January interest rate hike back into view, even as a new government complicates the politics around monetary policy. A significantly dovish shift in rhetoric from Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda and surprising opposition to further rate hikes by new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba have cast doubts over when the central bank would next tighten policy. Despite the recent change in mood around policy, however, sources and analysts see a growing economic case for the central bank to take Japan's rates further away from historic lows and for the BOJ to step up its hawkish signalling.
