La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano continued to spew lava and ash on Sunday, October 24, a day after a portion of its main cone collapsed.

Lava had extended to cover 891.9 hectares (3.44 square miles) by Saturday, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Satellite imagery analyzed by scientists also showed that 2,143 buildings had been destroyed by volcanic activity.
