Comoros ruling party wins parliamentary elections, opposition rejects results
The ruling party in the Comoros won decisively in parliamentary elections this week, the electoral commission said, but opposition parties either boycotted the vote or rejected the results, claiming fraud. The Independent National Election Commission (CENI) announced late on Tuesday that the ruling party had secured 28 out of 33 parliamentary seats in Sunday's election. The ruling party held 22 of the 24 seats in the outgoing parliament, which was expanded by a 2023 change in the law.

Oil gains capped by uncertainty over sanctions impact
(Reuters) -Oil prices crept higher on Wednesday as the market focused on potential supply disruptions from sanctions on Russian tankers, though gains were tempered by a lack of clarity on their impact. The latest round of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil could disrupt Russian oil supply and distribution significantly, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its monthly oil market report on Wednesday, adding that "the full impact on the oil market and on access to Russian supply is uncertain". The key question remains how much Russian supply will be lost in the global market and whether alternative measures can offset the shortfall, said IG market strategist Yeap Jun Rong.

German economy contracts for second consecutive year in 2024
Germany's economy shrank by 0.2% over the full year - in line with economists' forecasts - and by 0.1% in the final quarter, the Federal Statistics Office said on Wednesday, suggesting little sign of an imminent reprieve. "Cyclical and structural burdens stood in the way of better economic development in 2024," Ruth Brand, president of the statistics office, said at a press conference to present the data. Increasing competition from abroad, high energy costs, still elevated interest rates and uncertain economic prospects all took a toll, Brand said.

UK inflation drop gives relief to Reeves after market selloff
LONDON (Reuters) -British inflation slowed unexpectedly last month and core measures of price growth - tracked by the Bank of England - fell more sharply, according to official data that will be welcomed by Finance Minister Rachel Reeves after a market selloff. The annual rate of inflation edged down to 2.5% in December from 2.6% in November, the Office for National Statistics said, in contrast to economists' expectations in a Reuters poll for it to remain unchanged. Inflation is expected to rise again due to higher energy prices, continued fast wage growth and temporary stimulus in October's budget, and many analysts forecast it will top 3% in early 2025.
