Kong: Skull Island: Everything you need to know

The internet’s just gone wild with a new trailer for ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and some amazing posters showing the giant ape’s size, but with the film still almost four months away and a vague plot revealed thus far; here’s a guide to everything you need to know about the monster movie.

Who’s behind it?

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is directing, having only ever helmed one movie - 2013′s excellent coming of age comedy ‘The Kings of Summer’. ‘Godzilla’ 2014′s Max Borenstein, ‘Jurassic World’s’ Derek Connolly, ‘Flight’s’ John Gatins, and ‘Nightcrawler’ scribe Dan Gilroy make up the impressive team behind the screenplay.

Who’s in it?

It’s an all-star cast fronted by Tom Hiddleston, Oscar-winner Brie Larson, and veteran John Goodman. Joining them are Toby Kebbell (’Fantastic Four’), ‘Straight Outta Compton’s’ Corey Hawkins, John C. Reilly, and the immortal Samuel L. Jackson who make up an impressive roster of talent.

What’s the story?

Set in the 1970s, a group of explorers are tasked with checking out a mysterious, uncharted island deep in the Pacific. However, they’re unaware what inhabits the previously unexplored landscape, notably the mythical, giant gorilla known as Kong.

Why will it be worth seeing?

Not only is the latest trailer (you can see here) impressive and action-packed but the actors involved will hopefully give us some interesting, layered characters rather than a two-hour movie where humans are just running away from a massive ape.

We also see a much bigger Kong than we did in Peter Jackson’s 2005 ‘King Kong’, with his size dramatically increased here. One reason is to set up the quite literally massive battle that’ll happen in 2020′s ‘Godzilla vs. King Kong’ - and we know how huge that radioactive lizard is. We should, if we’re lucky, find out how Kong got to the size in this current storyline which will then lead into the next movie.

When’s it out?

Originally set for 4 November, 2016, the film was produced by Universal before Warner Bros. - the studio behind ‘Godzilla’ - took over, with an updated release date of 10 March, 2017.
