An 18-year-old gunman opened fire Tuesday at a Texas elementary school, killing 14 children, one teacher and injuring others.

The shooting is the deadliest K-12 school shooting in Texas history, with 15 victims confirmed dead as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed Tuesday that an an 18-year-old man is suspected to have killed 14 children and one teacher at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, about an hour and a half drive west of San Antonio. The shooter was also killed by responding law enforcement, Abbott said.

Here’s what we know about the city of Uvalde:

The shooting occurred in Uvalde, a small Texas town located in Uvalde County. Uvalde is about five and half hours away from Fort Worth, and is west of San Antonio.

Uvalde has population of 24,729 people, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report in July 2021. The town was founded in 1853 and is known for its honey and live oak trees .

The town has one school district, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, which has around 4,100 students enrolled during the 2020-2021 school year, according to the Texas Tribune.
