FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique (Reuters) -Rodrigue Petitot, who led protests in French-ruled Martinique, left prison on Friday after a court handed him a one-year suspended sentence for trespassing on state property during cost-of-living demonstrations. Petitot, known as "Le R", led last year's social movement on the Caribbean island where poverty levels are twice as high as in France and the cost of living is higher. The judges ruled that Petitot had pressured police into letting him into the governor's residence during a meeting with France's overseas territories minister, and that he had surpassed the limits of freedom of expression.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Trump administration is powering ahead with efforts to ramp up immigration enforcement, opening up the possibility of targeting migrants who entered through Biden-era programs and invoking an obscure immigration statute to make it easier to deputize state and local law enforcement to arrest and detain immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman said in a memo made public on Friday that immigration officials could consider whether to strip temporary legal status from migrants who entered through former President Joe Biden's signature "parole" programs. The memo provides guidance for the use of a fast-track deportation process that the Trump administration reinstated earlier this week, suggesting officers focus on migrants who failed to request asylum within a one-year deadline after arriving in the U.S.

President Donald Trump's pick to lead the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, has told lawmakers that he opposes the use of race as a factor when evaluating candidates for elite U.S. military academies, according to a document reviewed by Reuters. Hegseth's remarks, which have not been previously reported and which are more explicit than those at his Jan. 14 confirmation hearing, suggest he could quickly move to strike down a policy designed to encourage diversity in the military's officer corps.
