Kelly Clarkson wins primary custody of kids amid 'issues of trust' with ex Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson has won primary physical custody of her children with her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock.

According to court documents obtained by USA TODAY, Clarkson and Blackstock will share joint physical and legal custody of their children — daughter River, 6, and son Remington, 4 — with Clarkson holding primary physical custody of them in Los Angeles.

“The Court finds that under the circumstances present in this case, the interest in providing stability and continuity for the minor children weighs in favor of Petitioner having primary custody," reads the ruling, in reference to Clarkson.

Additionally, the document states that "the level of conflict between the parents has increased" and that "the parties have a difficult time co-parenting due to issues of trust between them."

Though Clarkson will have physical custody, Blackstock will FaceTime with the children every day. The document also lays out details about weekends, holidays and school breaks.

The document also states that neither parent is allowed to "speak in a derogatory manner" about the other parent to the children and that both will be listed as emergency contacts for the children on all school forms.

USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Clarkson as well as to Blackstock for comment.

On June 4, Clarkson filed court papers in Los Angeles to end her marriage to Blackstock under her married name, Kelly Blackstock, according to the Associated Press. They married in 2013. Blackstock also has two children from a previous marriage.

During the Season 2 premiere of "The Kelly Clarkson Show" in September, the singer took some time to briefly address her divorce, suggesting the split came as a surprise.

"2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life," Clarkson said. "Definitely didn't see anything coming that came."

Clarkson added that her divorce has been difficult because it also involves her children.

"What I'm dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart," she said. "It involves a lot of little hearts. We have four kids, and divorce is never easy. We're both from divorced families, so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts."
