Georgia prison officials have flagrantly violated a court order to reform conditions for prisoners in the state's most restrictive holding facility, showing “no desire or intention" to make the required changes to solitary confinement practices, a federal judge said. In a damning ruling, U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell on Friday held officials at the Georgia Department of Corrections in contempt, threatening them with fines and ordering an independent monitor to ensure compliance with a settlement agreement for the Special Management Unit of the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, about 50 miles (80km) south of Atlanta. The skies are predicted to clear on Wednesday as winds shift and move the dust, with temperatures dipping.
In last week’s paper, Samantha Becotte, President of the Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation, spoke about how “sometimes the best agreements are the ones that no one’s happy in the end of it.” There was great optimism heading into the April 13 weekend that the STF and provincial government could hammer out a deal—maybe not one that both sides would be happy about, but a deal nonetheless to break months of strenuous relations. The government, which said the measure will be in place for 12 months, did not provide details about the quotas or products involved, but noted it was also considering implementing quotas for four other steel products. Brazil's steelmaking sector had been long asking the government to impose higher taxation on steel imports, claiming that cheaper steel from Russia and China had been "flooding" the local market and making Brazilian firms idle plants.
