Some KC fans want Chiefs to have Alex Smith bang drum ahead of AFC Championship Game

While speaking Wednesday with the media, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked how much film preparation he does by himself before a game.

“I got a good mentor in Alex (Smith) on how to get into the film room and learn how to study defenses,” Mahomes said. “I’ve kind of used that and turned into my own different direction of how I can study and get the film done.“

Mahomes has spoken many times in the past about Smith’s mentorship when were teammates in 2017, Mahomes’ rookie season.

Chiefs fans know how important Smith was to Mahomes, and the successful five-year run Smith had as starting quarterback. During that time, the Chiefs had a 50-26 record and made the playoffs four times.

To honor Smith, a number of Chiefs fans hope the team will allow him to be the person who bangs the drum before Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Here is what some of them are saying on Twitter about Smith, who retired from the NFL after the 2020 season.

Other people fans would like to see bang the drum Sunday: former Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, actor Eric Stonestreet and owner Clark Hunt.
