Will KC Chiefs kicker Ammendola be back (if necessary) after Sunday’s poor performance?

Coach Andy Reid was vague Monday when asked if the Chiefs would keep Matt Ammendola on the roster, should their need for a backup kicker extend another game.

Ammendola missed an extra point and a 34-yard field goal in the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss at the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

“I can’t tell you that right now,” Reid said. “(General manager Brett Veach) is mulling through all that, working through it right now.”

The Chiefs’ next game is at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football.

Ammendola was signed by the Chiefs after Harrrison Butker sprained his left ankle on a kickoff attempt in the Chiefs’ opening game at Arizona.

After being hurt, Butker briefly left the game. But he returned to make a 54-yard field goal and three extra points using an abbreviated run-up to the ball, while safety Justin Reid handled the Chiefs’ kickoff duties and made one of two extra points in that game.

Butker then missed the Chargers and Colts games. After the Chiefs had beaten the Cardinals, the Chiefs signed Ammendola as a fill-in. Ammendola played at Oklahoma State and spent his first NFL season, last year, with the New York Jets.

It went well for Ammendola last week in the Chiefs’ victory over the Chargers. He made all five of his kicks, two field goals and three extra points.

But the poor performance at Indianapolis could have the Chiefs looking elsewhere, if Butker isn’t cleared to return to practice this week.
