Kate Middleton isn't allowed to use this cheeky nickname for Prince William anymore

From 'Babes' to 'Honeybun', 'Darling' and 'Stud muffin', many of us have pet names for that special someone in our life – and it seems the Royal Family are no different. Take Kate Middleton for example who was recently revealed to have a very surprising nickname for her husband, Prince William. Seriously, there's no way you'll guess it!

Cue: 'Big Willy'. Yep, we told you. Surprising to say the least! It's no wonder then that Kate has reportedly been banned from using the pet name for her husband of over ten years. According to the Daily Star, Prince Harry also made reference to the infamous nickname during the Cambridge's 2011 wedding, giving "a high-pitched impersonation of Kate calling William one of her favourite nicknames, 'Big Willy'."

"They certainly couldn’t get away with using [it] today," The Mirror this week revealed of the Duchess of Cambridge's nickname for the Duke, adding that another one of her former monikers for the future King was 'Baldy'.

But Kate's not alone, as Prince William has some cheeky nicknames for his wife as well. 'Babykins' and 'DoD' (which stands for 'Duchess of Dolittle') are just some of the pet names he uses for her, and the pair were both overheard calling each other 'Babe' and 'Darling' at the Chelsea Royal Flower Show in 2016.

Despite the, err, unique monikers floating around the royal palaces, there appears to be a very good reason why members of the world's most famous family opt to use them. In fact it's all to do with the Royal Family's communication skills – or lack of.

"The royals are not very good at communicating with one another," a royal insider told The Sun. "So this is one way around it. Nicknames are a way of taking the family tension out of things."

Another suggested reason for the royals use of nicknames is a little more practical and is all to do with their security and keeping their private life on the down-low. "Nicknames for the royals may seem like a bit of fun," a second source added. "But they do sometimes use them to identify one another while not making that information public."

Some of the other infamous royal nicknames we've heard include 'Willie the Wombat' – a sweet name Prince William earned at the age of two thanks to his mum, Princess Diana – and 'PG Tips' which is the moniker Prince George has adopted from his classmates.
