Karl Urban Was So Annoyed By Star Trek Into Darkness He Almost Didn’t Return For Star Trek Beyond

Despite its impressive gross and mostly positive reviews, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ was met with indifference by Trekkies when it was released back in 2013.

And it turns out that this malaise extended to some of the cast, too, because Karl Urban has now revealed that he was so annoyed about his role in Into Darkness that he almost didn’t agree to return for ‘Star Trek Beyond’ as Bones.

“I certainly was hesitant about reprising the role of McCoy,” Urban admitted to Star Trek.com. “I felt that I was in agreement with a vast number of fans and audience members and critics who, after watching ‘Into Darkness’, felt that the character had become marginalised.”

After portraying Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy in both 2009’s ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, Urban wasn’t under contract to reprise the character again, and he added that following his lacklustre work on the sequel he “was not keen to repeat that experience.”

Urban was actually in discussions with another film when he was contacted about returning for ‘Star Trek Beyond’. A proposition that he was “ambivalent about,” especially since he “really liked this other piece of material.”

But after sitting down with director Justin Lin, who replaced J.J. Abrams at the helm of the franchise in ‘Star Trek Beyond’, Urban was instantly “reassured” and “intrigued” by his vision and story for the character, especially after Urban raised his own “concerns and issues.”

Karl Urban insisted that he is delighted that he did make the decision to return for ‘Star Trek Beyond’. As are fans of the franchise, too, because not only was he the best thing about ‘Beyond’, but he’s easily been the highlight of each instalment of the rebooted series.
