Kansas Jayhawks among four finalists for Texas high school basketball recruit

Jamari McDowell, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound senior combo guard from Manvel (Texas) High School, has narrowed his list of college choices to four schools, he announced Wednesday on Twitter.

McDowell, the No. 141-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2023 according to 247sports.com and 143-ranked player according to Rivals.com, has a final four of Kansas, Texas A&M, Xavier and Wake Forest.

Earlier McDowell also had considered Kansas State, TCU, Minnesota, Alabama, Georgetown, Drake and others.

“These are my final four schools and they made it because of the people and resources,” McDowell told 247sports.com. “I’ve visited all of these schools except Kansas but I will visit them soon. I’m down to four. I still need to have a few conversations with a few people so I’m thinking next month or October for a decision.”

He told On3.com: “All of these schools made my list because of opportunity, their style of play, and the way they made my family feel. Even though I haven’t visited KU yet, we’ve been on the phone and I can tell they’re organic people so it’ll be fun to see what I end up doing. I’m still not sure myself.”

Of Kansas, McDowell told 247sports.com: “They got into the mix a little late but they’re good people. I speak with coach (Bill) Self and coach (Jeremy) Case and they say there’s opportunity to come in, play as a freshman and get big minutes. Also It’s Kansas, so they have resources and it’s a basketball school so you know they’re going to invest into the team.”

McDowell averaged 11.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0-assists, a game in helping the Houston Defenders AAU team win the Under Armour UAA Circuit Championship. He emerged as one of the better defenders on the Under Armour circuit.

He plans on choosing a school in the near future.

“I’ll be committing soon,” McDowell told On3.com in a recent interview. “I want to play for a good coach. I’m looking closely at the school’s resources, their NIL, and where they see me fitting in on the team.”
