Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason workout program, OTA dates set on calendar

The Super Bowl might have been just last month, but it won’t be long before the Chiefs and the rest of the NFL return to work on the football field.

The Chiefs now know the official start of the offseason workout program and organized team activities (OTAs), both of which are voluntary in nature, and the annual mandatory three-day minicamp.

The Chiefs will kick off Phase I of the offseason workout program on April 17, the NFL announced Friday afternoon. The first phase is limited to meetings, strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation for two weeks.

Phase II follows for a three week-span. During this period, teams are allowed to have on-field workouts in individual and/or group instruction and drills. The workouts are conducted at a walk-through pace and no live contact or full team drills are allowed.

The Chiefs enter Phase III of the offseason workout program in late May with 10 days of OTAs, which are scheduled for May 22-24, May 30-June 1 and June 6-9. Throughout OTAs, the Chiefs can conduct team-related 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills without pads, but no live contact is allowed. Player participation remains voluntary during OTAs.

The Chiefs conclude the offseason workout program with a mandatory three-day minicamp, which is scheduled for June 13-15, before taking the annual summer break ahead of training camp in late July. Specific dates for training camp are typically announced at the end of mandatory minicamp.

Kansas City can also conduct a rookie minicamp either the first or second weekend after late April’s NFL draft.
