These Kansas City area homes sold for millions. Can you guess which one cost the most?

It seems that every year or so some glitzy, historic or stately Kansas City area home becomes real estate news for its price or buyer.

And sometimes not so glitzy. The latest inductee is the needs-more-than-elbow-grease Sauer Castle in Kansas City, Kansas, an 1871 fixer-upper that last week was put up for $10 million, generally considered an outlandish sum. No home has ever sold for that much in the Kansas City area — not even close, according to home sales listed on the Realtors’ MLS, or multiple listing service.

In August, a sprawling mansion in Lake Quivira that cost a reported $30 million to construct was put up for sale, boasting seven bedrooms, seven baths, seven half-baths, a 30-foot-deep bathing pond and scuba tunnels. Alas, at auction, it fetched only $2.5 million.

The Sondern-Adler home built in Kansas City in 1939 by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright sold at auction for $920,000 in 2019, although it had been listed at $1.65 million. When Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ bought his Kansas City home in February of 2019, records show that the young phenom got the 4,300-square foot residence for just short of $2 million.

Compared to homes on the coasts, rich homes in the Kansas City area are considered a relative bargain.

“I would say high-end is $3 million to $3.5 million in the Kansas City area,” said Tom Suther, a Realtor with the Compass Realty Group, which deals in high-priced realty. “A lot of that price range is in Sunset Hills, maybe a Plaza condo or two, and in Mission Hills, a little bit of old Leawood. Then you have properties with acreage, folks who have equestrian facilities and properties where they keep horses.”

So what Kansas City area property has actually sold for the most?

We turn to MLS data. (Note: not every house ever put up for sale is put on the MLS, so it’s possible that some home at a private sale might have gone for more.) But according to the Heartland MLS only seven properties in Kansas City have sold for $5 million or more.

Here’s the list of the $5 million or more properties. Try to guess which went for the most. The actual prices will be revealed at the end:

1) In Paola, Kansas, Miami County: Wea Creek Ranch on Victory Road. It is an 8,500-square-foot Douglas Fir log home set amid 430 acres south of Overland Park. It has five bedrooms, six full baths, two half baths, a two-story stone fireplace. There’s a wishing well, barns, stables and its own lake.

2) In Kansas City, on Dunford Circle off Ward Parkway. The grand brick home styled like an English manor sold in 2014. Built in 1920, the three-story, five-bedroom home, at more than 10,000 square feet, has four full baths and three half baths. It features walnut paneling, plaster moldings, stone fireplaces, leaded windows, French doors, a sun room, hearth kitchen, formal living room and dining room, a four-car garage. Its back acreage boasts fountains, a stone patio and English garden.

3) In Holt, Missouri. It’s not the 1930 farm house (1,344 square feet) that costs. It’s the land — 910 acres in Clay County, 578 acres of which is tillable and more than 300 for grazing. The house is two stories, three bedrooms, one full bath, one half bath. Outside includes a pond and at least a half dozen barns or other out buildings.

4) In Mission Hills, a Georgian style estate on four acres on Wenonga Circle. The home’s finished interior comes in at 17,600 square feet with five bedrooms, eight full baths, three half baths, hand-planked flooring, Venetian plastered walls, carved archways and moldings, gazebo, an infinity pool, hot tub and stone patio. The grounds contain a spring-fed pond, a two-story cabana. The home has a third floor gym and steam saunas. The home’s list price at sale was half of the home’s original price to build in 2002.

5) In Mission Hills on Oakwood Road, a 10,000-square-foot New England Colonial built in 1937 on two acres, with seven bedrooms, eight full baths, three half baths, swimming pool and outdoor tennis/basketball court. It has Palladian windows, French doors, an imported English wood paneled library, four rooms with fireplaces, sitting room, sun room.

6) In Mission Hills, a manor in the style of a French Chateau, located on Wenonga Road, sold in 2015. It has four bedrooms, five full baths, two half baths, marble fireplace, French doors, iron accents, a pool, hot tubs, three-car garage, a terraced, sculpted garden with fountains, curved staircase, inlaid floors.

7) In Bucyrus, Kansas, Wind Ridge Ranch is located in Miami County on 333 acres with a pond and 22-stall stables and equestrian center. The ranch home is 8,540 square feet with three bedrooms, three full baths, family room, great room, a library and vaulted ceilings.

Did you choose the winner? It’s number 4, the Georgian-style estate in Mission Hills on four acres. The property sold in August 2020, the MLS shows, for $7.5 million.

3) The 910-acre ranch in Holt, Mo., sold for $5.1 million in 2020;

5) The New England colonial in Mission Hills on Oakwood Road sold for $6.1 million in 2014;

6) The French chateau on Wenonga Road in Mission Hills sold for $5.5 million in 2015;

7) Wind Ridge Ranch in Bucyrus, Kansas, sold for $5.66 million in 2020.
