Over the years, many of us have found a signature style that stays with us through any occasion, and for U.S. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, part of that style has included a timeless set of pearl jewelry.

Dating back to her days as a member of the oldest historically Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, Harris has incorporated the jewelry into her wardrobe. Not only are they seen as a symbol of wisdom and serenity, the sorority also refers to its founders as the "Twenty Pearls" and calls its 290,000 members “pearls,” making them a sentimental choice for Harris.

Inspired by the United States electing its first woman, and first woman of colour, as Vice President, thousands of women around the world are celebrating by wearing their own pearls to mark the occasion. One Facebook group called "Wear Pearls on Jan. 20, 2021" has even grown to more than 450,000 worldwide members.

With leagues of support from women across the country, online searches for pearl necklaces, earrings and bracelets are up collectively 189 per cent week-on-week, according to Lyst. Style icons like Harry Styles and Ariana Grande have also helped push pearls back into the spotlight, making it one of the most in-demand jewelry styles of 2021.
