Kamala Harris Wears Black Designers On Historic Inauguration Day

Vice President Kamala Harris chose an outfit for her historic Inauguration Day ceremony that made a statement: Her all-purple ensemble was created by Christopher John Rogers, a Black designer from Louisiana.

The Christopher John Rogers Instagram account posted a photo of Harris wearing the designer’s purple coat and dress.

“Thank you, Madam Vice President,” the caption read. “We are so honored and humbled to have played a small part in this historic moment.”

The vice president plans to wear clothes by Sergio Hudson, another Black designer, later on Inauguration Day, a representative for the brand told HuffPost.

Former first lady Michelle Obama wore a coat, sweater, belt and pants designed by Sergio Hudson to the ceremony on Wednesday morning.

Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, wore a suit designed by Ralph Lauren, Associated Press reporter Alexandra Jaffe tweeted, citing a Harris aide.

Harris is the first Black woman and South Asian American to be elected vice president in the U.S. Harris, a graduate of Howard University, is the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants.

The vice president also paid homage to Black designers on Tuesday evening, wearing a camel-colored Pyer Moss coat to a ceremony honoring the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pyer Moss was founded by Kerby Jean-Raymond, a Black designer from Brooklyn, New York.
