Kamala Harris's grand-nieces pay stylish tribute to new VP: 'Special coats to look just like Auntie's'

The fans who wore Converse and pearls to honor Kamala Harris on Inauguration Day weren’t the only ones paying sartorial tribute to the newly minted vice president. The trailblazing political leader also got a style nod from her two grand-nieces, who took inspiration from a childhood photo of the future VP.

Meena Harris — daughter of Harris’s younger sister, Maya — revealed on social media Wednesday that the matching animal-print fur coats worn by her two daughters were inspired by a similar hooded coat worn by a young Harris in a 1972 photo with Maya and their Indian family members: mother Shyamala and grandparents P.V. and Rajam Gopalan.

“Special coats to look just like Auntie’s,” Meena captioned a photo of 4-year-old Amara and 2-year-old Leela, her two daughters with husband Nikolas Ajagu. (She has not yet identified the coats’ designer, or indicated if they are real or faux fur.)

Amara and Leela also sported black face masks, tights and turtlenecks layered under bright plum-hued silk dresses — perhaps another tribute to their aunt, who wore a purple coat and dress set by designer Christopher John Rogers. The vice president was one of many inauguration attendees to wear the bold hue in what was interpreted as a symbol of bipartisanship as well as a show of respect to Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress and a 1972 presidential candidate who used the color in her campaign materials.

The little girls weren’t the only family members to make a stylish splash, however. Their father, Nikolas Ajagu, was also singled out for showing up in ultra-exclusive Air Jordan Dior 1 sneakers, much to the bemusement of his wife.

“I step away from Twitter for less than an hour for the inauguration ceremony and Nik’s shoes are #1 trending?????” the Ambitious Girl author joked on Twitter. “I cannot.”
