French lawmakers to vote on Wednesday on toppling government
PARIS (Reuters) -French lawmakers will vote on Wednesday on no-confidence motions which are all but certain to oust the fragile coalition of Michel Barnier, deepening the political crisis in the euro zone's second-largest economy. Barring a last-minute surprise, Barnier's will be the first French government to be forced out by a no-confidence vote in more than 60 years, at a time when the country is struggling to tame a massive budget deficit. The debate is due to start at 4 p.m (1500 GMT) on Wednesday, with voting about three hours later, parliament officials said, with French President Emmanuel Macron set to return to France from a state visit to Saudi Arabia during the day.

EU will look into extending steel import caps, says commissioner
The European Commission will look into ways to extend measures to limit steel imports as part of an overall plan to protect the sector as it decarbonises, Executive Vice-President Stephane Sejourne said on Tuesday. Sejourne, the French commissioner responsible for the European Union's industrial policy, said during a visit of the ArcelorMittal plant in Ghent that a priority at the start of his mandate would be a plan for steel and other metals. Sejourne, part of the EU executive that entered office on Dec. 1, said the plan would seek to alleviate high energy costs and protect against Chinese overcapacity as EU steelmakers cut carbon emissions to meet the EU's 2050 goal of carbon neutrality.

Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, was acquitted of all charges and Shannon Stillwell was found guilty only of a gun possession charge. US-backed group fights Syrian army as reignited conflict spreads
Fighters from a U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led coalition battled Syrian government forces in northeastern Syria early on Tuesday, both sides said, opening a new front for President Bashar al-Assad who lost Aleppo in a sudden rebel advance last week. Airstrikes also targeted Iran-backed militia groups supporting Syrian government forces in the strategically vital region, a security source in eastern Syria and a Syrian army source said. The sources both blamed the airstrikes on the U.S.-led military coalition which operates against Islamic State in Syria and has a small detachment of American troops on the ground.
