Julian Nagelsmann is being lined up to replace Hansi Flick as Bayern Munich head coach, according to Lothar Matthaus.

The highly-rated RB Leipzig boss has recently been linked with Tottenham, among other clubs across Europe, in the event that Spurs decide to part company with Jose Mourinho after a frustrating 2020/21 campaign.

However, it seems that Nagelsmann is now destined for the top job in the Bundesliga, with current Bayern chief Flick said to have been approached by the German Football Association (DFB) over replacing Joachim Low as Germany coach.

Low has served in that role for 15 years following Jurgen Klinsmann’s departure in 2006, but it was announced last month that he would be ending his contract early after this summer’s rescheduled European Championship.

Flick was only appointed Bayern coach on a permanent basis 12 months ago after an impressive spell in interim charge that followed the dismissal of Niko Kovac in November 2019, but is rumoured to have a strained relationship with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

Nagelsmann, meanwhile, has long been considered arguably the brighest young coaching mind in European football amid comparisons with Mourinho, leaving Hoffenheim to take the reins at Leipzig in 2019.

“Hansi Flick has an offer to become Germany boss,” Bayern legend Matthaus told Sky Germany following the holders’ Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

“Bayern Munich have already been thinking about Julian Nagelsmann as his successor. The Bundesliga game against Augsburg [on May 22] will be his last as Bayern coach.”

Meanwhile, reports from The Mirror on Wednesday suggest that Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo could be a target for Tottenham in the event that Mourinho is shown the door this summer.
