John Oliver’s advice for Meghan Markle ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry has resurfaced following the royal couple’s bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.

Markle sat down with the broadcaster for a high-profile chat which delivered a number of serious revelations that have been described as “devastating” and approaching “worst-case scenario territory” for Buckingham Palace.

At one stage, Markle told Winfrey that her treatment by the UK media left her contemplating suicide. She also claimed a concerned royal family member questioned how dark her unborn child’s skin would be when she was pregnant with Archie.

“I would not blame her if she pulled out of this in the last minute,” he said. “I don’t think you need to have just seen the pilot episode of The Crown to get a basic sense of she might be marrying into a family that could cause her some emotional complications.”

He added: “I mean, they’re an emotionally stunted group of fundamentally flawed people doing a very silly pseudo job. That’s what she’s marrying into. So I hope she likes it. It’s going to be weird for her.”

Oliver then quipped: “I wouldn’t marry into the royal family. I’m a commoner; I wouldn’t be welcome – especially after what I just said.”

The interview with Winfrey was shown in the US on Sunday (7 March) with its UK broadcast following on Monday on ITV (8 March).

It is now available to stream in the UK on ITV Hub.
