The Bikeriders, starring Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy and Austin Butler has landed a strong Rotten Tomatoes score after the first reviews.

Based on Danny Lyon's 1968 photobook, The Bikeriders tells the story of Benny (Butler), a young member of biker group the Vandals, who finds himself mentored by the group's leader (Hardy) during a tumultuous time for the gang.

Benny's story is told through his wife Kathy (Comer) to Lyon (West Side Story's Mike Faist), who is interested in documenting the Vandals' transformation from a rebellious group of outlaws into a sinister gang.

At the time of writing, The Bikeriders currently sits at a strong 89% on the review aggregator site with 19 reviews.

Critics have praised the work of director Jeff Nichols as well as highlighting Comer's performance as Kathy. Here's what the reviews have said:

Variety

"While it could be accused of romanticising some pretty damaged characters (the real-life Benny abused his wife), The Bikeriders doesn't pretend that motorcycle gangs can't be dangerous. Still, it goes a long way to humanise figures who’ve been long misrepresented on film."

Entertainment Weekly

"It's Emmy and Tony winner Jodie Comer who handily rides off with the movie. As Kathy, she's all puckered vowels and spritely sarcasm... Johnny may be the gang leader, but in Comer's hands, Kathy is the true boss."

The Guardian

"The performances here aren't subtle exactly: with Comer’s fierce twang, Butler’s soft purr and Hardy’s sibilant Brandoesque drawl. But there’s such enormous potency and impact in everything they do onscreen."

NME

"Eschewing melodrama for a more low-key register, The Bikeriders may not satisfy those looking for quick thrills. But this slow-burner is a stylish look at a bygone era, when all that mattered was having enough money to put petrol in your tank."

The Hollywood Reporter

"A striking memory piece."

The Bikeriders will be released in US cinemas on December 1. The UK release date has not yet been confirmed.
