Yahoo Movies Jif Peanut Butter Recall Now Includes Pre-Packaged Items Made With Potentially Contaminated Peanut Butter
Update: Following the initial Jif Peanut Butter recall due to salmonella concerns on May 20, several other food brands have recalled dozens of their own pre-packaged items made with Jif that was potentially part of the earlier recall. May 20, 2022: The J. M. Smucker Co. is recalling more than four dozen different Jif Peanut Butter products distributed and sold across the country due to potential salmonella contamination, per an announcement from the Food and Drug Administration. The recalled peanut butter was distributed nationwide in retail stores and other outlets, including all Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations. Recalled items, which include several types of creamy, crunchy, reduced-fat, and natural peanut butter, have lot codes 1274425 – 2140425. Consumers can find the lot codes are alongside the best-if-used-by date.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there have been 14 reported illnesses and two hospitalizations linked to the recent consumption of Jif Peanut Butter. An estimated 80 percent of sick people reported eating different types of Jif brand peanut butter before falling ill. Additionally, the salmonella outbreak that is believed to be related to Jif Peanut Butter currently spans 12 states.

Per data from the CDC, two people have contracted salmonella in both Georgia and Texas, while Arkansas, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington have reported one case of salmonella each.

While there have been no fatalities reported to date, salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Given the nature of the outbreak, the FDA and CDC both advise consumers to dispose of any recalled peanut butter they may have in their possession immediately. The CDC also suggests that consumers wash surfaces and containers that may have touched the recalled peanut butter using hot, soapy water. And since peanut butter has a very long shelf life, consumers should check their current supply of peanut butter to make sure none of it is part of this recall.
