Jessica Alba's Ethical Goods Company Is Now Worth $1 Billion

Who needs paltry acting wages when your ethical consumer goods company is worth $1 billion?

‘Sin City’ star Jessica Alba is currently in talks with massive multinational Unilever to sell her business Honest Co., which makes beauty and baby products, all with an ethical ethos.

The price of the company is said to be $1 billion (£755 million), a fair chunk lower than the $1.7 billion (£1.2 billion) it was valued at last year, after a round of fundraising.

But it’s also said that the company is still mulling whether or not to float itself on the US stock exchange with an initial public offering instead of selling to the conglomerate.

Alba co-founded the company in 2011, after becoming a mother for the second time, launching environmentally friendly lines in nappies, personal care and household cleaners.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company turns out an annual revenue of $300 million 9£226 million).

However, it’s not been without its controversies.

Last year, customers complained of skin burns from the company’s sunblock products, which then had to be reformulated.

Then earlier this year, there were issues surrounding the ingredients in Honest’s liquid laundry detergent, which was found to contain a chemical ingredient that the company claimed it would never use.

A lawsuit was also filed against the company in April, with claims that synthetic substances found in its baby formula range meant that it was misrepresenting itself as an ‘organic’ product.

Unilever is the Anglo-Dutch company responsible for making products such as Lynx deodorants, Dove soaps and body wash, as well as owning companies like Hellmann’s, Knorr and Lipton.

Alba is still acting, appearing in the Jason Statham actioner ‘Mechanic: Resurrection’ earlier this year.
