Owner Jerry Jones has finally made official contact with free agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr about joining the Dallas Cowboys for the stretch run.

Jones said he talked Beckham on the phone on the same day as the Cowboys’ 28-20 Thanksgiving Day victory over the New York Giants on Thursday at AT&T Stadium.

Jones said he had a good visit with Beckham over the phone and an official in person visit is being set up. He doesn’t yet have a time frame for that.

When told that Jones had made contact with Beckham after the game, quarterback Dak Prescott sounded surprised and hopeful.

“He’s not stopping,” Prescott said about Jones and the Cowboys continued pursuit of Beckham after initially pausing and then laughing. “But that’s good. I might send him another message . . . let him know how I feel. But I’m focused on what I can control and the guys in the locker room now. ”

Jones said the doesn’t know anything about Beckham’s health and rehab from a torn ACL that has kept him sidelined since Super Bowl 56 with the Los Angeles Rams last February.

“We’ll see. We’ll have to see,” Jones said. “I haven’t gotten the benefit of his rehab work and where he is. But that’s where it is.”

Jones liked what he got from the Cowboys receivers against the Giants. CeeDee Lamb had six catches for 106 yards, his second 100-yard game of the season.

Michael Gallup had five catches for 53 yards.

Jones said Beckham, a three-time Pro Bowler, would add to what they have at receiver.

“I think Odell stands on his own as far as being able to be additive, and I believe that,” Jone said. “So we’ll approach it from that standpoint.”

“Odell could help us. I believe that right now. Now, we’ve got to make it fit and that’s the challenge here.”

Jones said health and finances will be the deciding factor on Beckham joining the Cowboys. Beckham has had two ACL surgeries in his career and he wants a multi-year deal.

“I think just the general how we make this fit, and all of that,” Jones said. “Availability is huge, but the financial part of it is really huge too.”
