Jeremy Roenick has been suspended without pay by NBC Sports for comments made about his co-workers while a guest on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast recently.
According to Sports Business Daily, the broadcasting giant made its decision due to Roenick’s Dec. 19 appearance on the popular Barstool Sports hockey show.
During the episode, Roenick made a series of inappropriate comments about co-workers Kathryn Tappen, Anson Carter and Patrick Sharp.
He described a vacation to Portugal with Tappen and his wife. During the story, he made comments about his fellow hockey broadcaster’s appearance and joked about the three of them sleeping together.
“I play it off like we’re all going to bed together every night, the three of us,” Roenick said while describing at least one occasion when someone came up to him to ask if the three of them were together, per Sports Business Daily. “If it really came to fruition, that would really be good, but it’s never going to happen.”
He went on to describe Tappen as “one of the most professional” sports personalties that he knows.
Later in the episode, Roenick spoke about Sharp’s physical appearance as well.
“He is so beautiful, I’d have to think about it if he asked me,” the 49-year-old said. “I wouldn’t say no right away.”
Roenick, one of the NHL’s greatest scorers to come from the United States, discussed his time as Sharp’s teammate while playing together on the Philadelphia Flyers and described him as a good friend.
Roenick went on about how Sharp has been a good fit since joining the NBC Sports Chicago team in October of 2018.
“I think he’s great. I think he’s been great for NBC. Him and (studio analyst Keith Jones) do well together,” he said.
“It’s good to have, again, a beautiful face that talks well that knows the game because it’s totally the opposite when me and Anson (Carter) get on there.”
Roenick played 20 seasons in the NHL and has been an analyst for NBC Sports since 2010.
This comes three years after Barstool Sports hosted then-Tampa Bay Rays reporter Emily Austen for a live Facebook chat and she proceeded to make racist comments, losing her job with Fox Sports Florida.
