'Jeopardy!' Fans Can't Stop Talking About Matt Amodio’s Successor Jonathan Fisher

When Matt Amodio first stepped onto the Jeopardy! stage back in July, folks weren’t sure what to make of his unique playing style. But now that the 30-year-old computer science Ph.D. student has ended his historic winning streak — the second longest in the show’s history — viewers have strong thoughts about his successor, Jonathan Fisher.

On October 12, the day after Matt lost, host Mayim Bialik opened the show by sharing her thoughts about the unexpected turn of events. “There have certainly been some shocking upsets over the years on Jeopardy! and … I definitely was not prepared for what we witnessed in a highly competitive game,” she said. “Our new champion, Jonathan Fisher, unseated Matt Amodio who reigned on the Jeopardy! stage for 38 straight shows. Is this the beginning of a new streak?”

Without knowing it at the time, The Big Bang Theory actress was onto something. A week after defeating the 38-time Jeopardy! champion, Jonathan, an actor from Coral Gables, Florida, is still defending his title. But not everyone is happy about it — in fact, Jonathan has been receiving criticism for his slow starts, making conservative bets and only answering clues he knows for sure. And even when he's trailed behind the competition, he’s made surprising comebacks.

After watching Jonathan for several days, lots of Jeopardy! fans took to Twitter to admit that they missed Matt and wanted to see him back on the show.

“Someone please knock that Jonathan person off of #Jeopardy I don’t like him. But only because he’s not @AmodioMatt,” one person wrote. “Is Jonathan Fisher the new @AmodioMatt? Time will tell but I don’t like him picking answers from lowest amount to highest,” another added. “Jonathan Fisher ain’t it,” a different fan said.

That said, others had no trouble embracing Jonathan as the latest star on the beloved quiz show and encouraged fellow viewers to also give him a chance. “Not sure what people have against Jonathan?? I think he's delightful and I'm enjoying his run, I hope he keeps it up,” a person wrote. “Congratulations, Jonathan!! Love your smile and easy going style. Best of wishes for continued wins!!” another said.

Opinions aside, with a total of five wins, Jonathan has officially qualified for the 2022 Tournament of Champions set to take place next season. The annual two-week event brings together an elite group of Jeopardy! contestants who’ve won at least four games and puts them head-to-head to compete for the grand prize of $250,000.

Needless to say, Matt has also qualified for the ToC with his 38 wins, so there’s a high possibility that he and Jonathan will reunite on the Jeopardy! stage in the future.
