Google introduces new class of cheap AI models as cost concerns intensify
Alphabet's Google on Wednesday announced updates to its Gemini family of large language models, including a new product line with competitive pricing to low-cost artificial intelligence models like that of Chinese rival DeepSeek. It already offered a lightweight variant known as "Flash" but its new "Flash-Lite" model is even cheaper. On Wednesday, Google released Gemini 2.0 Flash to the general public after previewing it to developers in December.

Soccer-NWSL agrees to $5 million settlement to resolve player abuse probe
The NWSL has agreed to create a $5 million fund to compensate players who experienced abuse and implement reforms to resolve investigations launched by attorneys general for New York, Illinois and Washington D.C. after players came forward with allegations of harassment and sexual misconduct. Players from across the U.S. top-flight National Women's Soccer League went public in 2021 with allegations of misconduct by coaches and officials dating back over 10 years. The attorneys general launched a joint investigation into the allegations in 2022, which they said revealed the NWSL was "permeated by a culture of abuse."

Hundreds of papyrus scrolls were found in the 1750s amid the remains of a lavish villa at the Roman town of Herculaneum, which along with neighboring Pompeii was destroyed when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. The library of what’s called the Villa of the Papyri has the potential to add immeasurably to knowledge of ancient thought if the scrolls, which have been rolled up into the size of a candy bar, could be read.
