Jennifer Aniston celebrated the birthday of loyal hair stylist and friend Chris McMillan by posting a throw-back Instagram photo that resembles her look during the Friends era.
On Saturday, the 50-year-old Instagram newbie posted two photos of herself and the man responsible for creating “The Rachel” haircut based on her Friends character Rachel Green. “Happy birthday, Chrissy,” Aniston affectionately captioned the post. “We’ve come a long way, baby.” She also shared a modern-day snap of the pair.
Celebrity hairstylist McMillan created the 1990s layered ‘do, now iconic, for Aniston during the early years of Friends. Although Aniston’s character changed her tresses drastically throughout the 10-year series, “the Rachel” has held its place in hair history.
At the 2018 InStyle Awards, Aniston presented McMillan with the Hairstylist of the Year award, touching upon his iconic work in her remarks.
",,,You leave, you feel beautiful, you feel sexy you feel alive,” Jennifer said of a cut with McMillan. “Then you feel screwed, because nobody has the ability to actually do what Chris did to this haircut. I used to call it the Rachel hair, because I got that haircut, that was like, 'Wow this is amazing,' and then I was totally left with this frizzy mop on my head, because I had no idea how to do what he did. Nobody seems to know how to do what Chris does."
But in 2011, Aniston wasn’t so hot about the cut, telling Allure, "I love Chris, and he's the bane of my existence at the same time because he started that damn Rachel, which was not my best look. How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I've ever seen."
And according to E! News, in 2013, when asked by radio show The Kyle and Jackie O Show, "Would you rather have the Rachel haircut for the rest of your life or shave your head once?" the actress responded, "Shave my hair once, definitely. 'The Rachel' for the rest of my life? Shave my head once! Yeah, I'd shave my head once!"
The actress joined Instagram in October and reportedly acquired 1 million followers in just five hours. “Eventually — it's not going anywhere, right? Aniston told Ellen DeGeneres. “So why not join the party? And it's not that scary. [You can] share information, connect with your fans, right wrongs that are said about you, have fun, make fun of yourself, make fun of people. Help animals get rescued."
Aniston made a splash with her first photo, a reunion shot with the cast of Friends — Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow — writing, “And now we’re Instagram FRIENDS too. HI INSTAGRAM.”
She soon followed up with a Friends video clip featuring herself and Reese Witherspoon, who played Rachel’s sister. “My pain in the ass little burst of sunshine sister and I are working together again. But this time, we’ll be much kinder to one another. (Hmm, then again, we’ll just have to wait and see about that...).” The pair is currently starring in the Apple series, The Morning Show.
