Jelly Roll Reflects on Ups and Downs with Bunnie Xo: 'Ain't Always Been Hallmark Cards and Care Bears' (Exclusive)
"We had to really put in a lot of work to be together, and it was worth it," Jelly Roll tells PEOPLE of his marriage to wife Bunnie Xo
Low moments in Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo's relationship have helped them better appreciate the highs.
Fresh off receiving his first four ACM Award nominations for the upcoming 2024 ceremony, the "Need a Favor" singer is reflecting on how it feels to have Bunnie by his side as he's earned hits and awards throughout his whirlwind rise to fame.
"Imagine having everything you never thought would happen happen for you, coming from where I came from, then getting to do it all and share every experience with your best friend and your wife," Jelly, 39, tells PEOPLE a few days after Bunnie, 44, accompanied him to the 2024 CMT Music Awards — where he won three trophies and performed.
"I feel like last year CMTs was the launch of Jelly Roll, the artist. I feel like this year’s CMTs was the launch of Bunnie, the personality. She wasn't a plus one this year," he says of his wife of eight years. "That's really, really cool."
Jelly's success over the past two years arrives after more than 20 years in the music industry and quite a few ups and downs with Bunnie, with whom he co-parents daughter Bailee, 15, and son Noah, 7, (both from a previous relationship).
As the pair has celebrated the "Save Me" performer's accolades together, Bunnie has also gotten candid on social media about their journey as a couple. In a TikTok video shared last month, she opened up about their 2018 breakup and how the split ultimately helped them grow.
"I'm really glad she posted about that because I think it's important for people that admire our relationship and our love for each other, to also know that man, we put in a lot of work," reflects Jelly.
"It ain't always been Hallmark cards and Care Bears, and we had to really put in a lot of work to be together, and it was worth it. It was worth every second. It was worth every disagreement. It was worth every split. All roads pointed back to the North Star that was all love," he continues. "We're in the easy phase now."
Audiences have deeply connected with the romantic, vulnerable and silly moments Jelly and Bunnie have shared from their life together through social media and beyond. Perhaps it's time for a reality show focused on the spouses?
"We've thought about it," he says. "My hope would be to do one that was more around Bunnie's life with me just kind of being in it, 'cause everybody thinks I'm the personality in this, but I'm not. She's the funniest person on earth."
Throughout the past few months, Bunnie has shared clips of the pair singing together at bars and documented Jelly's several recent "reconstructive" oral procedures. In fact, she shares so many glimpses into their lives together that many fans may not realize her husband hardly posts personal insights online.
"Her social media carries me solid," he says. "I pretty much don't post on social media because of her. Why would I?"
