Tattoos are wild — and wild! — on the set of Suicide Squad, as both an inked-up Jared Leto and Common have been spotted shooting scenes for the DC supervillain caper this week.

Leto is looking particularly creeptastic as the Joker. Despite the presence of a cloak shrouding much of his body in this latest picture, we still manage to get a good look at the makeup that has polarized fans.

Leto’s green hair and grill/poor dental hygiene haven’t riled fans. But Joker’s tattoos — including a clownish grin on his arm, a “J” under his eye, “Damaged” across his forehead, a demented jester on his chest, and “ha-ha-has” all over — have upset some Joker-lovers, who say the tats undermine his chaotic brand of evil. The counter-argument: he is playing a villain nicknamed the Clown Prince of Crime.

The 43-year-old Oscar winner, who described his Joker as “nearly Shakespearean” in a recent Billboard cover story, has previously been spotted on set confronting gal-pal Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and being chased by Batman (a stuntman standing in for Ben Affleck).

Meanwhile, Common was sporting some body art of his own when the first images of him in costume on the Toronto set surfaced Wednesday. There has been much speculation over which supervillain the 43-year-old rapper-actor would be playing: rumors suggested it would be longtime Aquaman foe and card-carrying Suicide Squad member Black Manta or perhaps another Squaddie, the martial arts maven Bronze Tiger. But based on photos, he looks to be playing a character called Tattooed Man.

Tattooed Man has been the alias of a few baddies in the comics, beginning with Green Lantern foe Abel Tarrant. Common more closely resembles the newest iteration, Mark Richards, who has mixed it up with both the Emerald Knight and the Dark Knight.

This isn’t the Oscar-winning songwriter’s first dance in the DC Universe. Back in 2007, Common had been tapped to play Green Lantern in the George Miller-helmed Justice League: Mortal, which Warners eventually scrapped.

Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad also stars Will Smith (Deadshot), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang.  Like its companion piece, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, due out next March from Warner Bros., Suicide Squad has been plagued by Internet leaks due to shooting in major metropolitan areas. Batman v Superman filmed in Detroit locations, many sleuthed out and staked out by fans who breathlessly filed reports and photos to social media.

Suicide Squad, meanwhile, has been in production in several public areas of Toronto for the past two months. After some initial efforts by Warners to take down leaked video, the studio has seemingly given up on blocking all but the most egregious clips. Ayer took to Twitter to explain why he risked minor spoilers to shoot on location instead of a set and also address the flood of images that have popped up online, insisting they won’t ruin the movie.

Suicide Squad is slated to shoot in Toronto through the summer and is set for release Aug. 16, 2016.
