Courts & Crime

A Houston woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of fraud and other laundering-related offenses for allegedly working with others to take nearly $4 million from the city of Lexington, money which was meant to go to a local nonprofit.

The head wrestling coach at Madison Central High School has been charged with assault — domestic violence for allegedly beating a woman, according to court documents. We’ve got more details here.

And the Kentucky Jailers Association, along with the elected jailers of Boyd, Campbell, Kenton and Marion counties, are suing the Kentucky Department of Corrections over the cost of housing state inmates.

“I have to think this is a long time coming,” said Judah Schept, associate professor in the School of Justice Studies at Eastern Kentucky University.

Around the Commonwealth

Authorities have suspended the license of a Kentucky doctor after an allegation that he wrote prescriptions while he was out of the country. The doctor told the Herald-Leader today, “I do not believe I did anything wrong.”

Kentucky was largely spared from a significant, post-holiday surge in COVID-19 cases this month, according to Gov. Andy Beshear. Still, you may want to mask in these five Kentucky counties with high COVID-19 community levels, according to the CDC. See the map here.

Do you want to see Yo-Yo Ma, the world’s most famous cellist, perform in Mammoth Cave? Well I’ve got some good news for you.Yo-Yo Ma will have a five-day residency with the Louisville Orchestra and music director Teddy Abrams that will include two concerts in Mammoth Cave.

Tickets for the performances in Mammoth Cave will be distributed by lottery, which opens today and closes Feb. 5.

Sports

From now until the postseason, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays will be the only time to catch Southeastern Conference basketball.

Starting this week, however, Monday nights will also offer a reason to tune in. A seven-part documentary chronicling the history of SEC basketball starts tonight, and the origin of Kentucky’s tradition is a major focus.

Who is Kentucky basketball most likely to play when the ACC/SEC Challenge begins? Duke? North Carolina? Virginia? There are lots of intriguing games for the Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC’s new college basketball agreement.

All of the track and field coaches at Lexington’s Bryan Station High School, including two-time state championship-winning head coach Kathy Dodsworth, were relieved of their duties last week without explanation to players and families, according to school district correspondence and a parent.
